Regardless, take your pup to the vet now or it might be a lot more costly if you wait, the wound can fester and get infected and a lot more treatment might be needed. Most likely the vet can give you a payment plan, explain your situation to him. Either go to the vet who you took your pit to (esp. if it's the same vet who gave your puppy its puppy shots - which are very important) or find another vet - and do it soon - for the sake of your puppy. Your puppy's life may depend on it.

How long ago was this that you had time to "get rid" of your pit?

Sigh...

Take the pup to the vet. That's your only choice. Do a payment plan if you have to. The puppy is hurting.

Yep, you need to take him to the Vet ASAP. Where I am, there is a Vet that is very low of a cost but it is very far away, but they are the best in town for the care that they give the animals. Look in the phone book or online and call. Tell them the situation and ask questions of cost and if they can make a payment arrangement too.

If you can't take the pup to the vet, maybe surrender him to a rescue group who can give him the medical attention he need.

I hope you took your pup to the Emergency Vet. The last thing I would do in your situation is post on a board asking for advice - I would get to a vet ASAP. An open wound is never a good thing!

Is it just a small puncture wound? If so put some topical dressing on it. I like blue lotion I use for horses. You can get it at the co-op. I wouldnt cover it unless it is a larger wound. Keep it clean and watch for any infection.
I dont understand why you got rid of your pitt. It is a natural reaction for the dog to snap at a subordinate too close to its food. Moderator cut: snip

To snap, yes. To bite, no.

Withholding judgment and with biting my tounge... we clean the wound and apply Neosporin and watch it. This naturally depends on where the wound is located, how deep, and inspecting the wound often. So far, we've been really fortunate. Our pit mix is very aggressive when her food is in "harm's way". We observed this early and our other three mixed breeds have alternatives for feeding or simply wait until she gives them the go-ahead, as it were.If you can't afford the vet visit, then consider surrending to the pup to a rescue. When the time is right, you will find your new best friend.
