My new neighbors moved their dogs in this weekend. Their yard is fenced in, mine isn't (that will be changing soon). They are very big dogs. One is particularly mean, the one that's a mountain dog mix.
When my lab was growing up, he was best friends with the dog who lived there (who passed away a few years ago). He'd always run over to their gate to be let in to play.
I doubt the old lab will do that again, but I'm not taking any chances and will be fencing the rest of my yard shortly. My beagle basset will have to go back on a leash until our fence is installed.
My question is will these two groups of dogs ever stop barking at each other through the fence? How can I help my dogs adjust to having new dog neighbors?
go over to the new neighbor and see if you can enlist their help. First have a meet up on nutral territory, go for some group walks on leashes, then as they adjust let the sniffy's begin.

4 years later, and the dogs next door still bark like mad dogs at Nanners every time they see her. She just stares at them, or ignores them as she plods by like a baby elephant. She used to wait for a snout to poke through a chain link hole, then she'd bite it... but even that bores her now.
HOWEVER... different story when one of those dogs finds itself on this side of the fence in her territory. They not only don't bark, they run away. I don't blame them, as I'd also run away from an M-1 tank if it was heading my way.
Make sure there is space between the fences too. (Not right up against each other) It wouldn't hurt to have a row of shrubs and a 2x4 mesh fence inside the fence
That is what I am going to have to do with my privacy fence as our neighbors dogs get out and fence fight with mine through OUR fence. .........Their yard is only fenced on teh sides and the dogs go out the back. Grrrrr.
I would keep the water hose on with a nozzle screwed on. Every time my dogs approached the new fence or barked like maniacs at the other side, I'd say NO and spray them down with water. That often trains them to stop barking at the other side. The warmer weather will be helpful getting this training started. By the end of the summer they should be cured.
