Dyson animal. 100% the single best household purchase ever. I have two border collies and two cats.

Just for giggles, if you decide on a Dyson, as soon as you get it thoroughly vacuum with your old vacuum and then use the dyson. You will instantly feel completely fine with dropping $500.

I was actually going to start a thread about the dyson, so many people love it, and for the price, they should, so maybe we just have a bum one!
Maybe its clogged somewhere inside? If its the animal anything purple comes off the vacuum so you can get access to all of the places it could clog. Just unplug it first.

Here is an update on my original post asking for vacuum cleaner suggestions. I did take your advice and dismantle our Dirt Devil upright to clean and it did improve to some degree but not enough to make me rethink the new vacuum idea. I read all the reviews and there does not seem to be one clear winner. I finally took the plunge and purchased a Shark Lift Away Navigator and am glad I did. It is not perfect but what they say about the suction power is absolutely true! I bought it through BB&B with a discount coupon and free shipping( I could not find it in a store near me)so I was happy with the cost. It was very easy to put together as there are no screws, etc to line up. The machine is much lighter then my last cleaner although it takes a bit of getting used to as the design was very different as well.
Overall, I am very pleased with it's cleaning ability. It became apparent that it was not only a hair issue (short haired dog) but debris and fuzz from the toys she routinely destroys that was left behind in my rugs. Time will tell if it will last but if I get a year out of it, I will be happy. It sure beats getting on my hands and knees to brush the rugs!
