those are random heeler pictures from google images.... my bailey is a heeler mix, but heelers are such a conglomeration of breeds (dingo, dalmation, collie, etc. etc.), that there are many variations of their look....

this is my bailey:

I like most of the suggestions above... all are a possibility. The previous owners, according to the shelter, had penned him as a Cardigan Welsh Corgi but his legs are much too long to be pure. My guess was basenji mixed with corgi or other herding dog such as a border collie, sheltie, or Australian Cattle dog. He's got a lot of basenji traits, such as wrinkly forehead, intelligent and eager to learn yet difficult to train, and only barks when extremely frightened. Was reading another suggestion from yesterday, Shiba Inu, and he definitely has that type of temperament. He is always licking everything! Like the basenji, Spitz breeds and Shiba Inu's have a curly tail. His is carried down or up almost like a cat. He has double-coated fur, unlike a basenji, but not as thick as the Spitz breeds. His coat was much thicker in August than now - he "blew" most of it already. He is definitely a shedder. He's difficult to hold still enough to get a good photo standing up, but he's got the poise and stance of a show-quality male basenji,

Latetotheparty, my sister (an AHT, pet store owner/groomer) thinks he might have red heeler in him too.

"For the color, might even have a pinch of Chow somewhere, too. Any black spots on his tongue?"

No, his lips are black but his tongue is pink and amazes me how long it is when he yawns.

She looks a lot like a shiba inu, which in a large size is an akita. One little tiny one comes into where I work when it's out for a walk, and although she is smaller than your dog, they look very similar.

Someone else blogged about their dog, which was also a shelter mutt. Her dog looks almost identical to Rusty. Her guess on hers is Basenji mixed with Australian Cattle Dog.

I'd say there was a chow in the woodshed somewhere along the line. Any blue/black in his mouth?
