I took my dog to the vet because of him licking constantly. He had an infection in his anal glands. After antibiotic treatment, I checked with my vet and he said it's okay to put fiber powder in my dog's food. It helps bulk up the stool to make the glands release. I feed my dog dry food, but it's a prescription food, so he's been having gland problems because of soft stools since he's been on it. I use Wal-Mart brand fiber powder. My dog weighs 52 lbs. and gets 1 tablespoon a day sprinkled on his food. He gets fed 3 times a day, so I measure out 1 tablespoon every day and sprinkle 1/3 over his food each meal. I've been doing that for a week now and it's helping a lot. His stool is much firmer and he is more comfortable now. Hope that helps with anyone having that problem with their dog. I'm not sure about cats though. I have a cat but she is not having that problem. If your cat is having that problem, I'd check with the vet first. It's always best to feed dry food to both dogs and cats.

Welcome to the forum.. I guess my question would be 'why prescription food' if that is causing loose stool?

agreed, if the food is causing loose stools its obviously NOT a good food for the dog.
id much rather feed a food that didnt upset his stomach and NOT have to supliment, than mess around with trying to make a food that obviously doesnt agree with the dogs system a little more agreeable...
