We thought a raw meaty bones diet would put an end to Jimmy's chronic anal gland problems, but when two different vets examined him and told us one of his glands was not in the right place, we realized he'd be battling the problem his whole life. He didn't have as bad a problem in his old age as he did when he was young, but he always had it no matter what we fed him.

Poor guy was SUCH a good boy when he'd get them expressed! And he always felt so much better afterwards.

This is suspected with my Vito, too. Last time I had him at the vet, she said it seems like his glands are more to the sides than they should be, and maybe lower.

I've been feeding him pumpkin and the extra fiber in that seems to help a lot. I also never let them express his anal glands at the goomer when we go occasionally, and I always tell the vet not to express unless they are very full. I think that just exacerbates the problem, jmo.

I'm pretty interested in the connection mentioned in that article between liver function and anal glands. Vito had an incident shortly after we adopted him where he ingested a half bottle of high potency Vitamin D. We had to keep him on IV liquids for a week, with lasix and antibiotics to flush his system. There was talk of possible liver/kidney/heart damage. (He seems to be ok, and we do blood panels every year just to be sure.)
