I have a rescued mixed breed who is part beagle, part catahoula, and basically looks like a slightly taller-than average beagle with merled markings rather than the standard beagle tri-color markings. It's my first experience with either breed, and I like him.

Overall, I tend to prefer larger breeds to smaller. My dog is 35 lbs, and is absolutely the smallest dog I've ever had (intentional choice, due to a small home). I doubt I would go smaller. Toy breeds and lap dogs aren't my preference, as far as pets for me go. I also prefer short haired to longer hair. A small fluffy dog would be my last choice for a pet.

All-time favorite is mutts, because they're unique. Second favorite is the pitties because they're so affectionate and so hilarious.

My neighbors on one side have two bassets, which I adore, and on the other side, a white pit puppy who is neat. I'd consider either of those breeds, as well.
