I saw an ad this past week about a couple giving up the Great dane they had for 6 years just because the dog wasn't "getting" along with the baby. Then there was another one in which the owner moved to an apartment unit that didn't allow dogs of that size.

As a great dane owner soon to be two, this irritates me. I looked at rental places for YEARS gathering information on various units and areas that were dog friendly. As for the baby things can take time but just dumping the dog after a week is ridiculous.......These guys deserve better.

Both "classic" excuses. Real reason - they want to dump the dog.

You would not have to face that. Euthanasia must be performed by trained and sometimes licensed technicians and volunteers are never expected to help with that or disposal of the remains at municipal, open admission shelters. Though you might see that some dog or cat is due to be PTS on a particular date if not adopted out or taken by a rescue group.

I agree with the suggestion that you find a rescue group that is in need of volunteers (and they all are, every day). If fostering full time is not an option for any reason you can offer to help out those who do foster since it is a lot of work, especially if the person has more than 1 or 2 dogs to care for. Sometimes they may take in a pregnant dog and then there is the momma and her pups to care for.

I've got 3 fosters right now, in addition to my own 3 dogs and since a couple of mine don't get along with new dogs it means playing "musical dogs", shutting this batch in one room as I move others outside for walks or into a dog run for a few hours. I would love it if someone would occasionally offer to come take one or more for a good walk in the pasture or even in to town for a stroll. I'll stay and do the less appealing stuff - cleaning up the poop, etc.

And there is all kinds of other work that rescues need help with, from delivering pet food to folks in need who are trying to keep a pet even though they are going through hard times, to helping out at adoption events, (this is a big one if they do off site events) to putting up flyers about things like rabies clinics or fund-raisers. Updating websites, Facebook pages, Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet info, getting good photos. getting critters to the vets office or the low cost spay/neuter clinic, trapping feral cats, finding possible grants, writing grant proposals, keeping good records,.....and the list goes on and on.

Last week I put in around 55 - 60 volunteers hours and there are so many additional things I'd like to see get done that are not happening or are moving too slowly.

But you don't have to commit to those kinds of crazy hours, just what you can comfortably handle. Many hands make light work. So get some friends to get involved too.

I would live in a cardboard box (refrigerator-sized, to have enough space) under a bridge in Lawrence MA before I would give up my dog. He would eat before I do. (well, his trust fund would support him).

I would use my "female charms" before my dogs would miss a treat.

Even if I am in physical therapy three times a week from one of them......

Ha Ha.....that was worded oddly.....

I am in PT from Rip pulling me off the back of a truck and dragging me at least 300 foot.

I am just getting the use of my left arm back.......only my first finger is still numb.

Road rash is about gone.

I figured it was something like that but I was just being cheeky Let me guess...Rip either smelled something or saw something he wanted? Did he even know he was bouncing you along the ground behind him? Our Mariah did that to me in her younger years. As a two year old she was incorrigable. She once saw a squirrel by a tree and I was dragged (yes - on the ground dragged) around 30 feet so she could check it out

I sometimes wonder how we live through raising some of these stronger breeds
