I hope this does start to set a precedent that pets are more than property. What those people did was heartless. But if they know their pocketbook might be involved, they might think twice about it.

This caught my eye because a police officer wrongfully shot and killed a dog when he arrived at the wrong house for a domestic dispute call. http://www.myfoxaustin.com/dpp/top_stories/Man-Says-APD-Officer-Shot-His-Dog-20120416-ktbcw#axzz1sGHL2Qaq

I recently read that the above mentioned dog had 2 previous complaints in recent weeks. Still no excuse for shooting a dog. I'm really torn on this. I'm a dog lover to the umpteenth degree but I also admire the men and women who wear the uniform of law enforcement. How many times do we read about an officer being killed when checking out a domestic disturbance. I'm sure they are on hyper alert but there has to be a better way than outright shooting a dog which is trying to protect its property and owner. I feel so bad for this man and his incredible loss.

We had a friend whose dog was killed when left in one of those dry boxes at the groomer. This was a long time ago but there was absolutely no recourse for them. Perhaps the tide is changing.

Pet's "are" more than just Property. It is just a matter of time before the court's interpret them as such!

the video and audio from the police officer's dash cam was released last week.... thank GOODNESS the camera was not pointed toward Michael Paxton's driveway.... but only THREE SECONDS elapsed between the officer seeing Michael Paxton and ordering him to raise his hands and then shooting Cisco.... that dog never had a chance.... the officer just reacted reflexively .....

back to the topic at hand.... i can NOT believe that housekeeper just left that poor little dog lying under the table whimpering.... she seemed "fine?" REALLY????

how many dogs get hit by a car and come out fine??

I remember seeing a case in Iowa where teen vandals broke into a shelter and killed several cats, and the major crime was the supposed financial value of the cats, which is very low.
I know every state varies, but when animal neglect/abuse/cruelty is a felony with large lawsuit figures, it can only help.

It was an accident. If she really wanted to protect her pet she shouldn't have left it in the care of a maid.

Ridiculous award. I hope the maid service appeals.

No, this was negligence. The maid had been told exactly what to do to prevent the dog from getting out of the house and agreed to do it. The total lack of any effort to get help for the injured dog is unconscionable.

"Before she left, Lohre said she told the woman that when she was finished, she should leave the house through an enclosed mudroom in back. That way, Ruthie would not be able to get out.

At 12:22 p.m., Lohre said she received a call that the cleaning service had finished early, since an extra maid had come to help."

So the maid service called the owner, but did not think it was necessary to say, "By the way, we let your dog get out because we did not do what we promised to do, she got hit by a car, and we left her in the house."?

The dog was alive when the maid left. What she did was cruel. Veterinary care may or may not have been able to save Ruthie, but she deserved a chance or at least the option of euthanasia.

On top of it all, the maid left the house unlocked.

I know!!! Never mind the OP, that video on the side of the page caught my eye too! Terrible.
Having cops shoot my dogs is one of my biggest fears. Because they do that all the time.
