Our mini-Dachshund is 14 months old. She had one estrus. During this time her nipples swelled to the point where she loked as though she was lactating.

Her genital area also swollen. I am wondering if I should have had her spayed earlier. I hope that I have not opened the door to cancer for her.

I have never seen this in another dog. However, this is my first mini Dachshund female who is this young.

They usually do get bigger when in heat and sometimes stay that way but I wouldnt think it w/b to the point that it looks like they're nursing - as long as she's not leaking, I doubt it's a false pregnancy or anything like that but you might want to get it checked out if she seems uncomfortable etc. Another comment, is there a reason she hasnt been spayed?, would look into it if you're not going to breed her (and there's plenty of homeless doxies), she's at a perfect age.

its normal for the genitals and the nipples to sweell during heat (and usually first heat this occurs most prominantly)
however swelling to the point of looking like shes ready to lactte could indicate the hormones are a little stronger...

the good news is, given her age and that this is her first heat, call your vet, and make the apointment to get her spayed, 1 heat hasnt increased th cancer risk so much that youve now "ruined" your dog, so just go ahead call the vet and get her apointment made (be sure to tell them the date you noticed the first signs of heat as spaying uring an active heat cycle is messy and a ltitle more risky)
