My mother's dog had cancer, and the vet removed the bump. He had stitches put in. I'm thinking that he is healed, but the bottom looks red. How do I know if it is infected or if they didn't get all of it at the vet's? Not having any veterinary courses, I'm unsure. Should he go back to see a vet?
Are the stitches still in? Did he have a recheck after surgery? We tell our clients to watch for redness, oozing, or irritation, I would take him in to have a look. If they took the stitches out, maybe they missed one. It could just be normal irritation depending on how long it's been since the surgery. A little red is not uncommon, but without being able to see it, I would say better safe than sorry, you don't want to end up with a nasty infection. We don't charge for post surgical exams, so maybe you won't even have to pay for a quick look, and then you'll have piece of mind.
Yes, best wishes here too! Don't be afraid to call the vet with any questions. I went back to my vet 3 times and called them 5 times after my dog had bladder stones removed. I wasn't charged for any extra.
