I use Cosequin DS with MSM for all of my senior dogs. My French Bulldog had arthroscopic surgery on both elbows in Aug. 2013 and just two weeks broke his humerus right in the elbow joint. I feel the supplement helped him heal and recover the first time and pray it does him good now. Of course, arthritis develops in joints that have undergone surgical procedures so it's a double whammy for my Wolfgang. So here's hoping.
I use Cosequin DS for my dog, too. As he(Shi tzu) got older, my vet told me that I should get some of that for him. Nothing serious happens yet, but just in case, try Cosequin DS.
My 15 year old mountian cur is on Zukes, Hip Action, treats. I get them at Petco or pet Supplies Plus but they are also easy to find online. She started on them last summer when I started taking her with me on my occasional walks in the park. She had a lot of stiffness in her joints, especially her hips. When we started out she could barely manage a mile on level ground Now she routinely goes for 2-3 mile hikes with lots of hills. She still has a little bit of joint stiffness but she is not showing much sign of being sore. She loves the treats and they are a pretty reasonable price.
I adopt only older large dogs and have always used Rimadyl for them, with tramadol added when the arthritis pain gets too bad. I saw an ad for Dasuquin last month and read some good reviews about it -- so, on a whim, I decided to try it. I didnt expect much but thought it would be nice to have something that doesnt require a prescription.
OMG, what an amazing difference it's made in my current old gal. She now doesnt have to get up from lying down in 2-3 stages -- she just jumps up and runs. And her painful stifle (knee) doesnt seem to bother her much at all anymore. I still cant believe that an OTC product can work so well.
I am trying to find advice about the best supplement for older dogs. My doctor recommended a glucosamine for dogs. Please give me your thoughts...
Thank you
Bless the dedicated vets but like MDs they are encouraged to recommend the traditional/pharms. Do yourself and your dog a favor by checking out Cetyl-M a supplement that we've had great success with several geriatric seniors (Rottie, GSD, Beagle, Golden..) with unfailing significant success.
It's been around for many years and it started as a horse supplement but they also have a human supplement as well. We saw a marked (and sustained) improvement in our dogs within 4 to 6 weeks of use.
