I wonder if this is true because I know someone with a pitbull that ate three bags of chocolate candy and never had a problem with it.

Fact or Fiction: Chocolate Is Poisonous to Dogs

A small dog should be belly-up after eating a handful M&M's, at least according to conventional wisdom. But watching "Moose," a friend's five-pound Chihuahua, race around a living room after his sweet snack makes one wonder: Is chocolate truly poisonous to dogs?

FACT! Chocolate is poisonous to dogs! But it all depends on the kind of chocolate, how much of the chocolate the dog eats and the individual dog. All of our dogs have gotten into chocolate at one time or another, and Destiny has actually eaten 3 big Hershey bars once. None of our dogs have ever gotten sick from chocolate. I'm sure it's very rare for a dog to really get sick from eating chocolate, and I'm sure they would have to eat a lot of strong chocolate to really even risk getting sick, but that is true. I didn't read the link you posted, but yes, it is a fact that chocolate is poisonous to dogs.

Yes - it kills!

I know some people feed their dogs chocolate, and we've all probably met someone who's done it, but it's deadly. It might be a slow, accumulative death, but it kills.

Please don't feed your dogs chocolate .

Also bad:

Avocado
Alcohol (goes without saying, you'd think)
Caffeine
Any human medication unless yoou check with your vet first
Milk/Ice cream

I have also heard that eating small amounts of chocolate once or twice increases a dog's attraction to chocolate and then they are more likely to eat toxic amounts. Any truth to that?

You're right. It's the bakers chocolate and all dark chocolates. It is the cocoa in the chocolate that's deadly. Some of your popular very dark chocolate is extremely high in cocoa.

We always take our dogs to ice cream shop in the evening. We sit with our dogs. We gave them each a table spoon. They love the ice cream and have never got sick from it. Is ice cream really bad for dogs? Any comment?

My friend has a small dog about 15lbs who got a hold of some chocolate. Her stomach had swelled up really bad and the vet told my friend to watch her for the first 24hrs and if she survived she would be fine. I'm glad she didn't die from the chocolate poisoning but she was close to it.
