Maybe you have friends with the dog, which is not afraid to travel in the car. Try to go for a short trip with 2 dogs. Maybe it will not be so scary and stressful for your pet.

Sounds like a horrible experience for all, but the excerpted part above made me laugh. SO true, in our long-distance car trips as well!

I was going to say that some dogs never adjust I have a 15 yr old chihuahua that will never adjust to riding in a car no matter how many trips we have taken . Sad to say his last trip without me along will be soon . But I have been blessed to have had him for 15 yrs he was a squirmy 8 week old pup .

Yes, make sure your dog is secure.. use a crate or dog car seat something that is secure to the car and that they can be secured to or in.

A friends dog used to hang his out the window until something smacked him in the eye. A huge chunk I’d change later, many vets and specialists visits, his dog now sits in a dog seat and enjoys the breeze safely.

The vet laid into my friend and for good reason.. his dog could’ve lost his eye.

We had to take a cross-county trip with our Lab mix.

My husband placed two "carry on" suitcases on the floor of the backseat (one in each "pocket"), and then placed a large orthopedic mat* (for good support) that covered the backseat and the two suitcases, creating a large and stable, but comfortable, "platform". It was high enough and stable enough for our dog to shift positions, look out the window, etc., but it was so comfortable that he slept most of the way.
