....and hope people evacuating take their pets with them. So many were left behind 3 years ago when Katrina came calling. Just breaks my heart thinking about them....thinking about the people too but animals just don't stand a chance without humans
I feel the same, and I believe that Best Friends and North Shore Animal League along with other rescue groups are already there. I did see on the news that the Louisiana SPCA was already evacuating those in the shelter.
My boyfriend's sister had just moved there a couple months ago and has already evacuated with her husband and their dogs. I, too, worry about the animals there. I read an article online where someone (in charge) was saying that there was no reason at all for anyone to not be evacuated, and I couldn't help thinking, "yes, but are those people allowed to bring their animals with them?" Because if not, I can sure understand people refusing to go.
I don't know what would cause someone to leave their dog behind?
Maybe the registration process is turning some dog owners off? Maybe they don't want to be identified (have warrants out, etc.)? Maybe they don't own a dog carrier and don't expect to be loaned one by a rescue group?
I'm thinking here of the pit bull owners and other bully breed owners, I can understand the apprehension to register your dog with the ever-looming threat of pit bull bans running rampant across the country. Today you could register to evacuate your pit bull, tomorrow they can come to your door and take him away when they deem him "illegal".
I know they won't all get out, but I hope the majority of them do .

Many pitbull and crosses came up from Katrina. Most of them even with what went through were some of the greatest dogs ya seen.
Just keep the critters in our prayers.

Me too belle....saying my prayers tonight for all of them. Too many cruel people in this world towards animals. I hate to see animals suffer in any way. And I cannot fathom people leaving dogs tied outside or locked in garages or elsewhere during a hurricane or for that matter any other time. I know during Katrina people locked their dogs and cats in crates in the house. UGH! Well I will not sleep tonight worrying about all of them...I will be glued to the tv.
It breaks my heart just remembering Katrina and all of the animals that suffered and died through that horrible catastrophe. I wish all animal owners would just consider how helpless they are without us. They don't stand a chance.
