If people do this 'to keep up the standard' of a breed, I hope there is a nice place in hell for them.

Humans are so cruel.

I would agree with culling puppies with serious health defects. If the issue is genetic the dogs should not be bred anymore.

However, in "creating" a breed like these new crosses people should start with a big enough population to avoid the founder effect that has plagued our modern breeds and I don't think any kind of systematic effort is happening to prevent that from occurring with these new designer dogs.

If the breed registries were not simply registries but required proof breeding stock met certain criteria before dogs were allowed to product registerable puppies, I imagine there would be better quality. But then the criteria would be argued about and corruption would still occur.

You could not pay me to take a GSD from a top of line American Champion because there are no requirements in the standard for PROPER structure or working ability; it is just a caricature of that breed.

In my opinion, humane euthanasia is an option for puppies with congenital defects that limit quality of life. For all other puppies, spaying and neutering removes them from the gene pool. If a breeder is breeding enough puppies that they consider 'substandard' to add a significant amount to the pet overpopulation problem, perhaps taking a more critical look before they breed might be a wise idea.

Another thing is that you cannot telling for sure how a small puppy will turn out. Some things may be obvious but many things develop as they get older, that is why many dog breeders hold on to puppies they think may turn out especially good and they may decide to keep themselves.

I think we need to euthanise the "culling" breeder.

I think culling for the simple reason of not having perfection is totally inhumane - no different than what they are doing at high kill shelters in my opinion.
Not all pups are of show quality, sometimes none are and for that they are culled? Stupidity in the first degree. Those pups could become nice pets and companions, they could become assistance dogs, service dogs, or just plain nice company for the lonely.

Well, are you thinking of the puppy as a product or a living being?
Clearly the breeder thinks of it as a product. Which is why he's in the business.

Why produce and sell a dog that doesn't fit the standard?
Why produce and sell a dog, period? That's why this whole "responsible breeder" thing is an oxymoron. I can't think of too many things less responsible that one could do with their life.

(now this guy bred champion working GSD, he actually sold an adult male to Joe Rogan (fear factor guy) as a guard dog for about 15 grand, this dog knew commands in like 10 languages!)
Whoop-de-do, I'm very impressed with his prowess, skills, and celebrity - now that is someone to admire. By the way, who the heck is Joe Rogan, what is fear factor, and who even cares?

Seriously, if this guy is suffocating, poisoning, or putting puppies in the freezer to kill them then he needs to be arrested.

Oh, because we are higher beings, blessed and endowed with high intelligence in the likeness of god himself and far above everyone else in the animal world. We're not animals, you know! We were made to rule over the beasts and use them to our advantage in every way possible, and freeze them to death when they don't turn out how we like.

Didn't you know?
