As A kid I too loved Old Yeller but I think as a kid my favorite dog movie was Disney's Big Red that came out in 1962 and featured a beautiful Irish setter. I think I saw that movie a zillion times as a child! Drove my mom crazy as then I was Irish setter crazy!

At the other end of the spectrum is this powerful but graphic 5 minute video about chained dogs.

And some are called "humans", supposedly, intelligent, kind hearted race. What scum walk this earth!

Don't even get me started on "humans"....
I love "Best in Show." Yes, the dogs are the supporting characters of their human caregivers but I love the satire. It's one of my favorite comedies and always has me laughing out loud.
Other dogs that I have loved that are featured in films but are not necessarily the main characters are the dogs in "The Lost Boys" (the character of "Nanook" is a personal favorite.)
There is, of course, "White Fang" and "The Call of the Wild" but I actually preferred the books to the movies.

One of my favorites (with a very young John Cusack):
The Journey of Natty Gann

This is a book, not a movie, but it is a very special book. I used to read it a lot when I was teaching preschool--but you don't read it--there are no words, it is all beautiful drawings.

What a tear-jerker! Whoa! I sobbed buckets. I don't mean that I sniffled discreetly into my tissue. I mean that I sobbed like my mother had died.

Other dog (or wolf) movies I like:
Eight Below
Turner & Hooch
Beethoven
Homeward Bound
White Fang
Iron Will
The Journey of Natty Gann

K9 -- starring "Jerry Lee", with Jim Belushi, is another goodie!

Also remember loving "Lad of Sunnybrook." Hope I got that right -- a Lassie-type movie with little "Liz Taylor"-type girl -- it's been years.)

I loved that movie I own it and can't watch it enough How cute those pups are
