Yep, get the big, bad government out of your lives, but be quick to jam home the blame when your personal circumstances don't go swimmingly.

He should try a different line of work or learn a true skill. There are a lot of survivors out there........time to roll up the sleeves.

Let's be honest, what is the difference between being "laid off" or "fired" it's just a nicer way of saying it.

Garbage Man vs Waste Engineer

It's hard to believe you're serious with this. One gets fired for cause, that is, doing an unsatisfactory job, among the reasons for which might be chronic tardiness, abenteeism, poor actual work performance independent of attendance record, etc., etc.

One gets laid off because the employer announces ahead of time that there will be a workforce reduction of X numbers of workers in a specific job category or perhaps several categories. Sure, if the employer is able to finagle this he will attempt to get rid of under-performing people in the lay-off, but that still doesn't mean the same as firing. In many, if not most situations, there is a legally enforceable labor contract which will specify how the senority rules will work for lay-offs as well as the notification procedures and time-lines.

Note that I am not taking sides in your disagreement with the OP about the state of the economy. But the above post is preposterous even if we assume you are correct about the rest.

Well you at least somewhat understand the point I was making. Technically, it's not exactly the same, but it's not the same as choosing to leave. In our business when we go into slow season, we fire or lay off our weakest employees. Technically it's different, but overall it's the same result stemming from under-performance. I wasn't trying to get a big reaction from everyone, but I found it funny how defensive the OP became after my first post, which wasn't intended to rouse her feathers. I also don't like people playing the "victim" card and using it as if the majority of Americans are in the same boat as her son.

Instead of blaming it on the economy, maybe her son should step up to the plate a bit more and say okay next time, I'm going to go above and beyond my job title (since this is a recurring thing).

As I had said myself, they are totally different, especially in a large company which you do not have. But seriously, do some research before you type nonsense as you are doing it again. The OP is Tightwad, i which He proudly proclaims is a crusty old GUY smoking his pipe. How you could even post that he is a woman is beyond me.
