Yes, it counts if the total of the day is above the minimum of the hours worked. The owner would have to pay the difference if you made less in tips than the hours worked. But if you're only averaging $60 a day, then that's lower than the current minimum (according to current Fed minimums), but I'm guessing this was years ago where the hourly minimum is lower perhaps?

Yes that was long time ago and I didn't work full time.
That's pretty good then. $60 a day part time is not bad, especially if it's a long time ago. I don't think I've ever made that much when I was working at McDonald's and Arby's when I was in college.

Those Asian restaurants hire as few people as possible so usually you get more tips than average.
My previous roommate's wife worked in a Japanese Hibachi and she could make $80 a night.

"Could make $80 a night" is not the same as actually making $80 a night every night. Plus, people tend to brag about their biggest tip nights like gamblers brag about a big win. Most of the time they lose.
The arguement can be made that the minimum wage is intended to allow an individual to live a conservative, average life, get proper food and reasonable posessions, without begging on the sidewalk or dying in a ditch. Different areas have different minimum wages for a reason, usually based on costs in that area. Here where I am, if a person is thrifty and dosen't succumb to the constant bararge of advertising designed to part you with your cash, you can life an a good moderate quality of life with a little thought and planning. No, you will not have the lifestyle of the rich and famous, but you might just be happier and have far less stress in your life than if you stay in the rat race and keep running around the same track. Stuff is just stuff, I finally realized that and am much better for it..

Not really anymore. Minimum wage has failed to keep up with the increased cost of living for the past 30 years. It only appears to still be so because government programs have picked up the difference.
Minimum wage, with no health care through work or the government... good luck...
My staff earn around $10/hr. If minimum wage was raised even just to $10 (forget the unreasonable requests of $20 or $30). My staff would go take an easier job at say McDonald's than working here. We would have to raise our staff pay to say $12 or $13.
I only may $15/hr to manage. I would seriously consider stepping down if I could make $13 as a staff therfore requiring my company to raise my wage to keep me here.
I don't know what kind of business you manage, but in Santa Fe, NM, the minimum wage is $10. Managers in retail (dept. mgrs) make minimum wage. Before the $10 minimum was passed, they made $7.50, or whatever the minimum was then. Most people I know who were offered manager jobs, West Coast as well as NM, turned them down, saying the extra aggravation wasn't worth what little extra money (if any) they would get. The only people who took manager jobs were looking to move above that, career-wise. If you're making $5/hr. more than the people you supervise, you're doing very well, even for an office environment.
