Doctor who mocked sedated patient owes him $500G

Saw this on MSN and it's been a long time since I've seen money measured in Gs.

Now of course it's Ks.

When did Gs become Ks?

It's a typo. I've been seeing them more in larger mass media outlets and it really peeves me. Do we really care so little or are we overworked?

It started with people who wanted to appear tech-savvy by flippin' the lingo around. It doesn't really make much sense of course, since 1K = 1,024, not 1,000. Luckily, megs and gigs haven't emigrated so much and are still pretty much stuck in their native land.

According to Wiki

"Grand" is slang.

1K dollars is $1,000. One Grand also = $1,000 as does 1 large. 1K bytes is 1024 bytes. Most of us think in dollars not bytes.

It's okay. You can think of 1K as being one thousand all you like. The fact that it isn't is not a real hindrance. You can always just pretend that the usage actually arose from within failed US metrication initiatives in the 1970's rather than from popularization of geek-speak in the 1990's. That's not what actually happened, but again, what would it matter.

K is shorthand for Kilo which is Greek for 1,000. Unless of course the "geeks" invented Greek.

It was not some sudden pop-fascination with Hellenic culture and history that put K into the place of G. It wasn't even called IT yet, but that's the culture from which the usage was taken.
