my nephew was out of work since last April and had run out of unemployment. He's had no income for a few months now, his wife works, makes good money and he had 6 figure job when he last worked. Called unemployment office, they signed him back up for unemployment at top figure $1192 a week (he has 2 Kids) and he'll get $600 more a week on top of that. He won't rush back to work.
From my understanding the Federal government decided to do this in order to avoid a depression. I disagree with the amount but the money will flow back into the economy.
If an unemployed individual's employer opens back up the employee will be forced to return to work. If they refuse their old job they will be cut off from unemployment.
A lot of the businesses won't go back to 100% anytime soon because of the social distancing guidelines have to be enforced within the establishments. A good percentage of the people who got laid off can't be hired on as it would violate maximum occupancy rules.
It's hard to jump on the "outrage" bandwagon when many people on this forum freely state that it's no ones business how much money a person makes, how much they pay in taxes, what loopholes they use to keep their money and that we shouldn't pick anyone's pockets.
But , someone who gets an additional $600 a week (for 16 weeks) along with their unemployment should sit before a jury of their "city-data peers" and account for every penny to make sure they deserve it!

So glad you're not in charge.
Stop begrudging workers, for cryin' out loud!
NYC UBI pays one of the lowest in the country vs nearby states. The most you can get a week in NYC is $462. While in NJ it is $600. The calculation has a sliding scale depending how much you make too. Since the benefits have not seen any significant increase in over 3 decades. It is less than minimum wage.
Yes, but Unemployment is for those who were laid off. Someone who just quits and walks off a job can't qualify for Unemployment. In addition, when we get on the other side of COVID 19 and open the economy back up, there's going to be a mad rush for whatever jobs might be available. I would NOT advise anyone sitting on Unemployment for a long period of time.
You cannot voluntarily quit and receive unemployment. I'm sure it's a technicality if you volunteer to be laid off, but that's just a nuance that unemployment claims processors don't bother to explore further. If you're on record as being terminated WITHOUT cause, you may collect.
I thought the whole idea of the beefed-up benefit was specifically for these worker to NOT re-skill and change industries, as some sort of attempt to convince us all that this IS temporary and we WILL be back to work at those jobs?
It's interesting you promote a thread begrudging people who contribute positively to society yet aren't as fortunate while the Go'vt is tossing huge amts of money to those who are extremely fortunate
Exactly. People get up in arms because a barista or uber driver is now making more than their salary, but no one cares that companies that have had a lucrative run for years get millions. Where was their "rainy day" money they were supposed to have? I guess that is just low-income people that are supposed to have that.
