First off, I work at starbucks trying to get through school, so saying that you are glad they are closing is very offensive because there are REAL people working to pay the bills that are being impacted the most by all of the closures. You can hate starbucks and their coffee but there are a lot of blue collar workers that are taking the fall when it comes down to it.
Also...franchises AREN'T real starbucks, they are found in other stores and they are allowed to use the same products but they don't go through ANY of the same training as we do, something that isn't a great idea for the starbucks name since many of those stores don't do anything with the same care that we are told to use.
IN Houston there are two Starbucks right across the street from each other. Once the economy was starting to tilt I knew I should have shorted SBUX. $5 coffee is one of the first things to go...just like organic food.

Starbucks Corp. reported that second-quarter earnings fell to $25 million, or 3 cents per share, from $108.7 million, or 15 cents per share a year earlier.
Revenue fell to $2.3 billion from $2.5 billion in 2008.
Starbucks is getting killed here in Rhode Island. As others have stated, they've opened stores WAAAAAY to close to each other, and they're all almost empty anyway. Dunkin Donuts owns the coffee market here, Honey Dew is a distant second and then Starbucks. It's not even close.
Yes there are. I don't know how or where you could've heard that. I work in a town with my starbucks and a franchise in Albertson's.
I noticed the same thing too when I lived in Socal. When I inquired about franchising, the answer was that they allow "select" franchising with large companies like albertsons, but not to individuals.
I was at the mall the other day, and at the entrance, there was a large Starbucks shop. Didn't think anything of it.
Then, I walk inside the mall, start walking, and a few hundred feet away, there's a Starbucks stand. I go to the food court, another Starbucks. I counted FIVE Starbucks stores/stands/baristas in this mall, albeit it's a large one (3-4 levels, 1.4 million sq ft). It doesn't surprise me that they need to "downsize".
I hate Starbucks. There so many better local places to get coffee at, imo. They opened one in the mall here and it didn't last a year. I guess it has one location/25k. people here which is good and these locations seem to do well.
