The UAW stopped negotiations with GM tonight, a person familiar with the talks said.

The GM and Chrysler proposals on the Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association “contradict the explicit terms of the Treasury loan agreements, and would severely hurt retirees,” UAW legislative affairs director Alan Reuther said in an e-mail tonight. “These proposals are a non-starter as far as the UAW is concerned.”

I think they should just strike for 3 months. Show GM where they stand. Better yet, strike for 6 months. That'll show 'em.

Looks like it is more likely that GM and chrysler should go into bankrupsy as teh only solution to their problems.

Claim bankruptcy, and hit the reset button. They need to rid themselves of the blood sucking unions.

DING

Every State in the UNION needs to do the same. A recession is the perfect time to bust unions sucking the tax payers and businesses dry.

What about Congress? They sit up on the hill and worry about what baseball players are on steroids?? WTF? Who cares, and why should they worry about it, while the country falls apart..
They grill the UAW President about the unions retirement and healthcare plans, I think the UAW Pres should have said they would gladly give up thier plans for congresses plans!

Thats right...go on strike for 3 or better yet 6 months...that will show GM a thing or too.

Question is "who can hold out longer...person signing the checks or those who stand in line for a check"

The management at GM (and the other 2) should've shown a backbone, and stood their ground against the unions years ago. Instead, they just caved and caved to more union concessions. I don't blame Gettlefinger for doing his job even if its bad for the country. Its his job. Again, I blame the mgmt at the big 3 for this.

There is no good solution here now.

Both GM and the UAW stood with their hands out taking government money and promising to "fix their house". I had my doubts based on previous UAW statements on any concessions.

Fine, then give us taxpayers back all our money we loaned you and go bankrupt !

Management will force concessions and in turn give themselves bonuses. Happened at the airline unions. 50% pay cuts, thousands of well paid jobs lost, and management gets bonuses.

Thank God there is a union that actually has a backbone.
