Accounting is a very two tiered profession. If you don't get into public accounting right after graduation your profession has taken a huge hit.

Get into the big 4 or other public firms and you open yourself up to much more opportunity for the rest of your career. If you don't do that you will be stuck earning mediocre wages for the rest of your life.
