This is really going to depend on the school policies regarding passing grades, they vary. Check with the school.

Now in terms of future education, say college, that usually isn't a passing grade.

I think though as others have mentioned, there seems to be a bigger issue in terms of work ethic, focus and motivation - that's not good signs. Would be best to encourage the young person to "turn it around" not just for the grade but also in terms of personal accountability, responsibility, and follow-through.

And with the way most states have alternative completion options if a kid can't pass the regular test, very few don't graduate due to them.

Maryland has four (Algebra I, English 10, Biology and Local, State and National Government) and the students start taking a couple of them in 9th Grade. If they can't pass them then they can do a project.
