Which is not relevant. We are not talking about the past. We are talking about the present. People need to get over this phobia we have of health care. No one will be harmed by health screening, and some people might benefit from it.

Let me ask you this, what if they diagnosed you with something else instead of just depression? What if they mistook your depression for something more serious. What if as an adult it prevented you from getting a job? You have forgotten to add in the chance of them misdiagnosing you. Just how accurate do you think they will be? We die from medical mistakes, a misdiagnoses of a mental disorder will happen, and at least as often as we mistakingly kill people with medical mistakes every year.

LMAO!!!

"According to a 1999 report by the Institute of Medicine, as many as 98,000 Americans were dying every year because of medical mistakes. "

American doctors perform a staggering number of tests and procedures, far more than in other industrialized country, and far more than we used to. Since 1996, the percentage of doctor visits leading to at least five drugsā€™ being prescribed has nearly tripled, and the number of M.R.I. scans quadrupled.

Certainly many procedures, tests and prescriptions are based on legitimate need. But many are not. In a recent anonymous survey, orthopedic surgeons said 24 percent of the tests they ordered were medically unnecessary. This kind of treatment is a form of defensive medicine, meant less to protect the patient than to protect the doctor or hospital against potential lawsuits.Herein lies a stunning irony. Defensive medicine is rooted in the goal of avoiding mistakes.

But each additional procedure or test, no matter how cautiously performed, injects a fresh possibility of error. CT and M.R.I. scans can lead to false positives and unnecessary operations, which carry the risk of complications like infections and bleeding. The more medications patients are prescribed, the more likely they are to accidentally overdose or suffer an allergic reaction. Even routine operations like gallbladder removals require anesthesia, which can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

How many kids will be misdiagnosed and medicated? How many kids will lose legitimate job opportunities with a wrong diagnoses on their record? I'm betting a lot and America's previous medical mistakes record proves this.

Obviously, I put my "no way" vote into this pile.

I don't trust this by a long long shot. It took 15 visits to 5 doctors to finally get my son properly treated for Tourettes. I finally had to go to a specialist, a Child Neurologist!

Before that he was misdiagnosed all over the place by regular doctors and nurse pracs. All kinds of meds were offered. None of which would have helped, and might have hurt his Tourettes. Could have made him suicidal, made his tics way worse, ETC.

I think they will end up sending 3 out of 5 kids off to get further evals. It will be a nightmare of paper work. In the end there is no way they can guarantee safety at school anymore than they can now, or ever could. If only we had the control we dreamed of having, the world WOULD be a better place. But we don't. And we won't.

I have a really hard time thinking this will pass. If it does I might just pass out. lol

This is most likely an autism screening seeing as how it's preformed by a regular doctor and not a psychologist.

Well, I'll gladly answer your questions.

1) It depends on what it was and if I agreed with whoever diagnosed me.

2) I don't know how people with mental illnesses diagnosed, but I'd like to share how I was diagnosed. When I met with my psychiatrist, she told me she thought I was depressed. She shared the symptoms of depression and asked me if I agreed, in which I did. She did the same thing when she diagnosed me with anxiety and binge eating disorder. So, in my case, my diagnoses were mutual agreements between me and my psychiatrist. In my opinion, my psychiatrist was very accurate. And I'd like to add that my parents definitely agreed.

Now, if I didn't agree with my psychiatrist, I would've let her know that I'd like to get a second opinion before I accept the fact that she believes I was _____________ (whatever she thought it was). And in fact, I'd get a second and third opinion.

3) I don't see how it would affect me getting a job. Medical records are sealed. How would an employer find this out (unless you told them or they found it through your social media use)?

4) I believe I addressed the misdiagnosing issue in #2.

5) I believe that people with mental illnesses are diagnosed very accurately. I trust that psychologists and psychiatrists are doing their job properly.

A regular doctor shouldn't be diagnosing Autism. Shouldn't it be people who are around the child on a daily basis, such as a speech pathologist?

autism screenings are generally not performed by regular doctors. To get a real dx, you need a developmental pediatrician, a psychologist who is familiar with autism or a pediatric neurologist and these folks usually have a team of therapists to help. At a minimum, a speech therapist and an OT should be present at the eval.

I knew a young person who was planning a school shooting at his school. He was building and exploding bombs, and practicing with an assault rifle that was in his home. No one would ever have suspected, at least not from knowing the parents. But the fact was, he was showing signs of extreme moodiness, seemed to have changed to a very angry person by mid high school. A mandatory psychological screening would probably have raised red flags that he was in trouble.

That being said, it is already on most states' school physical forms. There's a checkoff box regarding whether the student is psychologically able to participate in school, and whether he has any condition that poses a threat to others.

Screenings are recommended and completed by the child's pediatrician. They would then send the child for additional testing if needed.

Most regular pediatricians refer for testing based on what parents say. Very few pediatricians have enough expertise to dx and many are on that *wait and see* course that most of those who have autistic children have had to fight.
