I'm not trying to trivialize the stabbing but I noticed the attack was at 7:15 AM and so many kids were in the building. I went to a couple high schools and classes started at 8 or 9 AM. Isn't that the usual?
Our first bus arrives at 6:55, kids go to either the gym or cafeteria until 7:30, classes begin at 7:45. Administrators will usually arrive sometime after that up until 10 or so if they're coming in. If they do come in before classes start they'll stay in their offices until class start time. Teacher report time is 7:15 (some of us arrive at 6:45 as part of "additional duties as assigned). School dismisses at 2:25.
My kids' system (different County than where I work) starts classes at all four high schools at 7:20, dismiss at around 2:15.
The high school involved lists a period 1 start time of 7:22, which is slightly earlier than most schools. Some schools have homeroom first and then go to 1st period. Schools in my area start either homeroom or 1st period between 7:20 and 7:40 AM. Because of bus schedules, some students could be arriving at these schools before 7:00 AM. Students typically have to wait in the cafeteria or lobby until a first bell rings before going to either their homeroom of 1st period.
Our kids' high school started at 7:30 AM. A lot of schools now have what is called Zero Hour or something similar though--or many teams have sports practices or maybe band practice, etc. before school actually starts too. Our high school is pretty busy from about 6:30 Am until 9 or 10PM with various activities going on.
Most of our local high schools start at 7:10 to 7:30 AM. Many have activities, lessons, clubs and zero hour classes starting a half hour or so before the actual start time (6:40 to 7:00 AM). To my knowledge, none of the public high schools in my area have an official start later than 7:30 or 7:45 AM.
When I was in high school, a l-o-n-g time ago, the buses started to drop students off at school about 6:40 AM and I believe that school started at 7:05 or 7:10 AM.
OP, where/when did you go to HS?
