I don't think that word means what you think it means.

If by reading something you don't agree with you become "indoctrinated" into something, you don't have much of a grasp on your original values. What did the student think was going to happen? She was going to become a lesbian by reading about lesbians? She might develop sympathies for the protagonists? Oh god forbid.

I read extensively among the works of Ayn Rand as a teenager, whom I do not agree with at all. I didn't become a raging libertarian - I decided she was a sociopath with little grasp of reality, but a few good points. Because, you know, I was capable of critical thought.

Reading a book that presents a different point of view is not indoctrination. It's educating yourself.

Would the anti-racists be up in arms over them?
Somehow, I kinda think so.
But then, it appears that "racism" and "bigotry" are valid concerns.
Morality isn't.
You could not be more wrong. I'm vehemently "anti-racist" and I think all three of those books should be required reading. If you don't have enough sense to put literature in its historical context you're not ready for college anyway.

You clearly don't, if you think assigning a particular book to to a student who has applied to and paid for admission at a university amounts to indoctrination.

Some of the ancient Greek pottery is downright depraved.

Sommie, have you actually looked up the book in question? Or, you know, read the link in the very first post?

Lightbulb Duke freshmen refuse to read assigned book

They should transfer to Jerry Falwell's Liberty University.

That's a place where they won't be exposed to new ideas. They'll learn all about the definitive writings of a bunch of semi-literate middle east nomads from thousands of years ago. You know, the ones who came up with all the ideas anyone could possibly need.

New ideas are obviously scary to those kids.

When I went to school, if you didn't read an assignment-you flunked. It's as simple as that!

It's not a course.

It's a "summer reading list".

What a scam. I never had a "summer reading list" in college and neither did my kid.

It's also INTERESTING that it's about a lesbian and "graphic".

Because they KNOW that the ICK factor among men still exists regardless of marriage equality but the lesbian PORN factor is popular. Nothing to do with Christianity, either.

People are so NAIVE.
