USA has a real tough time tracking Rn, as...
1) we have very minimal testing happening. ~ 1%
2) USA test results are among the slowest in the world. Some still at 7+14 day wait, vs S Korea. 15 min the first week of testing. (6 mo ago) $4 testing in S Korea. $120+ USA. (If you can find a yest?)
3) minimal contact tracing in USA, so we have no clue how many people have spread.

https://www.acsh.org/news/2020/06/23...age-race-14863 Scroll down to "Infection Fatality Rate by Age."

BTW-- risk of an American dying in an auto accident this year: 1 in 10,000. ..If you're under 55 and worried about dying from CoViD, maybe you better stay out of cars too.
People keep talking about the death rate. There is more to COVID. The rate of serious illness. Ask any parent if they want their child gasping for breath for a few weeks while worrying if things will get better or worse.

This family had a good outcome but it could have been worse.

Good points.

Is testing really less than ~ 1%? Of what, total population? Anyway, if tests take 7-14 days to yield results, they are useless except for vague statistical purposes, and they call it "science". Contact tracing was obviously a lost cause from the get-go, just words coming out of so-called experts' mouths.

Seems that if one experiences symptoms, best bet is to try to ride it out for a week, then rush to hospital if short of breathing and hope the hospital has capacity to treat.

I don't see how schools, especially those in hot-spot areas, can open safely under these conditions.

Certain people are profiting big-time from this whole mess. The rest are sucking hope.

Good Luck!

In my county, they announced that the schools will be zooming at least until January.

What fun that is going to be.

S Korea, NZ, Taiwan...

How did they do it?

Trick question which will require 2 minutes of research, as each controlled the pandemic very differently, but with similar economic / societal impact and vastly lower death rates that USA.

We're so 'smart' (?)
Compare apples to apples.

As in FL vs TX?

Some States are doing a vastly different job of covid control (not that states should be in control)

Covid gave the USA plenty of time to listen and learn of community spread.

WA. Carehome spread was lesson #2

NYC lesson #3

Adjoining NJ and MA lesson #4

DC lesson #5 (they commandeered tests and PPE from Western States to protect "the swamp")

FL and TX lesson #6 (reopening for memorial day weekend)

How many lessons do we need to prove we have a basket case of rotten apples?
(Our enemies are watching in bewilderment)

USA could have easily responded just as effectively as S Korea, (10 min testing); Taiwan ( masks); Thailand (immigration) or NZ.(close borders) But never as quick as Singapore (personal tracking detectives from day one).

This is an "education forum", let's respond with educated and informed solutions!

We've all read about "crying wolf", and the "sky is falling"...
I trust we can get beyond "this is how we've always done it". I'm stuck in Texas hearing that every day.

It's not working with covid (as expected).

Many, many countries are handling this (Rwanda the latest). Maybe the USA should consider listening, learning, applying what works for others!

The S Koreans didn't invent 10 min testing. The formula was published by WHO. The USA is still trying to invent a wheel (test) that is not flat on one side.

Sad.
Very sad

145,786 unnecessary deaths sad
Millions of jobs
Thousands of companies
Years of lost progress

Education (?). I hope someone (in USA) is learning something.... But apparently very slowly.

It kinda does. Given the HUGE uptick of violence in certain "urban areas" with the "defund the police" garbage.

Watch what's been going on in NYC.

Did you not see the drive-by shooting of a man walking across the street (Bronx) with his 6 year old daughter?

Kids will have to walk to schools...

No, as in countries that are actual comparable, not whichever nation in the world happened to fit your argument.

Florida and Texas are in the same country, before you reply to this post.

Like it or not, the United States are not a unitary governmental system, but instead deeply federal horizontally and vertically, even down to the county and municipality level. Even deeper, there are also water management districts, school districts, other special districts, each with its own degree of sovereign decision-making power under its jurisdiction as defined by constitutions and statutes.

That is not easy to understand, even if people pretend it is.

As for the degree of school opening in the next several weeks, regardless of what governors or presidents may say, the ultimate decision and responsibility lies with the school district superintendents and other members of their councils.

Good Luck!
