My parents paid for my college education expense, even my graduate school. I think I am going to do the same thing for my children.
I mean children's education goes first, I will try to cut off my other less improtant expense to make me able to afford their education.
I don't understand some parents've been worked for a long time, and they don't have any savings for children's college education.
If you are like me - layoffs happen - most college savings we intended to save, have been used to float us on daily expenses between layoffs. We put money into a fund which was supposed to be for the college fund, which is now tanking.
I am sure there are many like us. So our kid will have to take out loans, and unless he gets a scholarship somewhere, he is going to community college for the first couple years to take those waste of money gen ed classes out of the way at a discount rate. And then transfer into the U. of his choice.
Whatever happened to the kid working while going to school? My parents helped me as much as they could but I worked a summer job and sometimes worked during the school year. Actually, I had better grades when I worked--maybe I had to schedule my time more carefully. I had a little resume to start my career with, too!
Work is good for college students--helps show them what they could be doing for the rest of their lives if they don't finish school!
If they are able. But I always think it also good that the student save too and work part time during summers and after school . Then they may have to work part time when attending school. Not only does this help with college expenses but I personally found it a motivating factor as well as a good learning experience in itself.
I agree with TexDav and photobuff42. I working during the summers and sometimes part-time during school. I had scholarships, loans, and my parents helped me. I expect that I would do something similiar for my children.
Absolutely. If the parents can afford a good quality of life, then college savings should be primary to save for--after retirement. I'm certain that I will save up well for my children's college-- I don't want them to have to work (so much as some kids do; class till 3 and work till 10) and be stressed out all the time.
I find that if kids work for college, most of the time they will make the most of it, and I would be willing to help them out. I don't believe in funding a child's education who might waste it even while attending.

You don't seem to have much faith in your kids. We felt that our kids were in college to learn and study, not to work minimum wage jobs. They worked during the summers.
