What's being done to rebuild schools in Haiti? As educators, what can we do to help? Other than donating money, how can we give our talent as educators to help those kids educationally.
I would be willing to give up my vacation time to make good things happen there!
Can we volunteer? What will they need in that regard? When will they be ready?
nothing. these people just want handouts. they do not want to do anything to better themselves unless someone completely gives things to them. i wouldn't waste my time if i were you. now...go ahead and say i am hateful.........i am just educated and a realist....sorry.
My guess is that at this point, when there is lawlessness, very little good medical care, and not enough food to go around, the schools are probably not the first priority.
If you wanted to volunteer as a teacher in the future (which I think is what you are asking?), I would think that you'd have to speak French or Creole, or whatever they speak in the village/area that you are volunteering in.
i guess if you want to risk your life to make an attempt to educate these people go for it. you are not going to get someone on this forum that can tell you exactly what to do. you are going to need to find out elsewhere.
I realize that in a triage situation, education is not first. But lots of things will need to be done: rebuilding structures, getting instructional materials, organizing, psych services, possible training of new teachers, services for orphans, etc. We all have talents in some area that keeps education systems rolling. I don't think you would have to necessarily have to speak French or Creole, just be willing to lend a hand, especially if you have some experience.
Several articles I've read have said that the one redeeming factor in this tragedy is that there were already many relief agencies working in Haiti so that they are not starting at square one.
I personally think at least understanding French would be helpful, but being fluent in French or Creole would be best. best bet is to track down an organization that was already in the country before the quake and ask them what they need in terms of volunteers. obviously, the priority right now is safety. doubt if the capital will be up and running by summer. if you want to start out sooner, maybe check for areas of the country that didn't suffer as much damage (mostly the northern areas away from the capital) and see if you can help out there. a lot of orphanages and schools did survive the quake, best place to start would be there and then, after some time, work your way towards PAP and rebuilding what was destroyed. I would hope they wouldn't be rebuilding permanent structures right away; better building codes will need to be put into place in case a future quake occurs (even before the quake, the buildings were falling down)

Speak for yourself. Gosh, what whiners to complain about a little thing like an earthquake that killed all those people and destroyed their homes and how overly emotional they are to cry about losing all their children.
Photo, I've wondered the same thing myself, but my guess is that until they get their physical needs taken care of, schools will not be a priority and if we tried to go over there now, we'd just put more load on the system that's trying to get food, water, and medical care to the people. I sent money, and later, when things get settled we can try to go over and maybe I'll see you there next year--after all, they're going to be rebuilding for a long, long time. A good website to look for volunteer opps is idealist.org - Welcome to Idealist.org - Imagine. Connect. Act.. Also, check out Fly For Good - Welcome. It offers lower airfares for volunteers.
They won't let me rep you any more Stepka, but this is great info! For some reason, my gut says go there. It didn't quite say that in New Orleans, even though my head wanted to try. I just have a feeling that good things will come from all this...
