i would be very interested in any follow ups from some of the original posters of this thread! Where did you end up living? How was your first impression of El Paso? How do you like it now?

I was wondering if you live on base. I read your post, but saw it was from 2008. We were told we may end up on Border Road...any thoughts??
Thanks so much.

Just thought I'd chime in here.
If you're looking at Border Road I'm guessing you or your husband is an 0-4. We were offered Border Road too, that housing is very small. They also offered us Beaumont housing (on hospital base) which we took. It is Ok, and larger than Border Road housing. However we were on the waiting list for about 8 months for this housing.

I've just been catching up on the Fort Bliss/Housing etc. We'll be coming over from germany (and in the states for the first time in like 8yrs).

Can anyone reccomend somewhere to stay when we just get into town (that takes dogs and cats?)

So far all the advice has been really helpfull, and since we originally come from New York, it will be pretty hard to scare us off.

(the talk about tarantulas and centipedes may do it though)

We live on post, but because of your husbands rank you should be able to get a pretty decent house. Ours is kind of crappy and we are actually moving off post in a few weeks. I actually work for the schools here and I think they are pretty good. If your child goes to Bliss or Milam (on post and the air field) there really shouldn't be any other kids bused in. It should be all military. We live in housing that is not on main post and the school I work at is a mix of military and civilian even though it's on the Army post. But these are just kids who live across the freeway, they are by no means shipped from the bad parts of town.
The Bliss Elementary attendance zone is mostly on the base but includes a portion of inner Northeast on the other side of the Patriot Freeway which is kind of run-down. Logan Elementary and Travis Elementary are pretty much the same way. Hughey Elementary, which is in East-Central, is sort of half on the base, half off. I think that while Burnet Elementary's attendance zone is mostly off the base (north of Fred Wilson and west of Dyer along Alabama), it includes the extreme northwest corner of the main post. Milam Elementary is exclusively on-post and I heard the new Powell Elementary will be, too, although they're letting Hispanic kids from the Burnet attendance zone enroll there on a voluntary basis.

There is no public middle school or high school in El Paso which serves the base exclusively.

Yup...Hailing currently from Ansbach Germany. Weirdly they're saying his report date is Oct 10th but his deros is Aug 28th and we wanted to put in for an early come over.

They should be cutting his orders in the next few days so things should be a bit clearer

I am in the the same situation you are in! What is your experience with the housing office? I am having a difficult time getting any reliable information from them. As of the last conversation we are # 25 on the list. I just don't know what that translates to .... any insight???? Anyone????
