Most of the time the generation born and raised in the U.S. is the one that starts speaking English and by third generation, their Spanish speaking abilities have diminished so much that they can't hold a simple conversation. I have cousins that are such an example, they were the 1st and 2nd generation born and raised here, and they can't converse in Spanish. They will assimilate. It may take a generation or 2, but it will be done. Half of Texas's counties are majority Hispanic, and they were that way ever since Texas became a state. You don't see them speaking Spanish today, do you? In fact, they sound authentically Texan and are even more Texan than most of the whites that live there today.

Thanks, and right back at'cha (except for the being Independent part)... as long as we don't discuss homosexuals or sex ed, I think we could actually get along just fine.

Would you two like to have some privacy for a few minutes?

This very valid point is often brought up in these discussions, but just hasn't sunk in with some people yet. It's a simple matter of which immigrant population is most recently "booming," as you'll see the same happened with other immigration waves (like my own Russian & Polish ancestors) throughout history. I help inter-generational Hispanic families at the library, and it almost always follows this pattern. So I see no need to worry, as the issue should eventually work itself out over time.

Sorry, I know we strayed off topic for a few... but isn't it nice to see that people can get along, even if they have different views on certain topics? I wish more people would follow that example, and maybe we wouldn't have such political "warfare" in this country. One can dream.

No apology called for. I agree with that.

Oh, c'mon. She and I generally disagree. Sometime, you and I agree. You don't live in California, do you?

I do have family who live in Fort Collins.

I think people miss the fact that in the post independence, pre civil war period, there were debates whether to make English AND German the co-official languages of the original 13 states! Why? Because German immigrants were moving here (especially to PA) en masse and most did not speak English. So even in the late 1700s, early 1800s, we had the same issue like today. How to accommodate a large, rapidly growing foreign population. Now, German Americans make up the single largest group of people in the U.S., and not a single one (except the Amish) speak German. By the way, do people even know the Amish learn to speak German fluently when they are kids? I live near Amish Country, and they speak an antiquated form of German no longer spoken today amongst themselves. But, no one ****s their pants over that I don't like illegal immigration like the next guy, but I'm not one to believe the sky is going to fall because some people that come here don't speak English. What a lot of non-Hispanic people don't know, is that WE WANT OUR KIDS TO LEARN ENGLISH. We are not that pretentious! Those are mostly La Raza socialist types that are a minority of the population.

I was just joking. I live in Germany but will soon retire to Colorado, maybe Loveland or Colorado springs.

But about Spanish, seriously folks, do we really want to be illiterate around so many of the people we meet every day? I think Spanish should be mandatory as a second language in our schools.

I like much of Colorado also - but will likely stay where I am or move back to Washington.

I entirely agree that Spanish language instruction should be mandatory - i am glad that I chose it as an a "mandatory elective" - in Seattle.
