So you disagree with the poster that said a person born in the United States is an American and that where their father was born is irrelevant?

What are your criteria for being a "Real American"?

Not to mention that his father George was a U.S. citizen even though born in Mexico. He was governor of Michigan at one time. You can't hold that political office without being a U.S. citizen so Mitt was no anchor baby.

This is Bush's fault, and Romney's gringo accent is just as bad.

As someone who grew up in a community/school district in which 80 different languages were spoken, and now live in a state where just 2 generations ago, Spanish was the first language of 8 of 10 residents, I must say, the fear that Spanish will replace English is the most unfounded fear of the Right.

This is one area where you all can relax. Your grandchildren's gay, Mexican-American, abortion having, socialist, Muslim, fascist neighbor will speak English just fine.

Most of the people who have this unfounded fear grew up or still live in the Midwest, Northeast, Southeast (except Florida) or the Plains states north of Texas They don't know history that the current Mountain and Pacific states up to Oregon, and Texas, were inhabited by native peoples AND SPANIARDS! Spanish has an integral history in the southwest region, longer than English has. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and these days, I speak, read and write English better than a lot of native English speakers, and Spanish is my native language. As I said before, who are the real Texans in Texas? The Northeast or Midwestern transplants that populate the Metroplex, Houston, or Austin? No, it's the former Mexican colonials that live in the southern HALF of Texas's counties you don't hear them speaking Spanish these days do you?

Face it, people. Texas is, was, and always will be, be populated by people of Spanish descent. The Spanish beat you to Texas by 300 years, stop whining already over a non-existent problem. The kids that were born and raised here largely speak and converse in English in school and speaks broken Spanish at home. There really needs to be levelheadedness in this debate. There's too many people on the anti-illegal anti-Spanish side who think that Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California were always populated by northern Europeans and that the people of Iberian and native extraction is a new phenomenon

Another thing, there are hundreds of thousands of Mexican voters in the US who became naturalized U.S. citizens. Romney is doing what the Left has done. Blame the left for this, not Romney.

If this is true that most Hispanics assimilate to the English langauge aka learn it and speak it then why do politicians, businesses, etc. feel the need to reach them in Spanish rather than English?

Not if the left has any say about it.

All it takes is one non-hispanic American from any foreign country making a discrimination issue of the US Government printing forms in Spanish and not in the language of their native country. I'd like to see it go all the way to the Supreme Court. Declare English the Official Language of the US and ask the Federal government how much money they would save by doing away with all of the bi-lingual stuff.

It's easy. Because the Democrats started the trend, and the Republicans have no choice but to play catch up. That's how it all starts. If anything, don't blame the people. They have had nothing to do with it. Blame the Left for enabling it. Besides, the ads only target the first generation immigrants, many of whom are here legally. Not all Mexicans that live here are illegals, the ads are for targeting those first generation legal voters who are more likely to pay attention if the ad is in Spanish. Trust me, almost 100% of their kids that are born and raised here speak English fluently. Young Mexicans in urban Mexico also hopped on the English bandwagon, just like every other non 3rd world country on Earth. When those kids give birth to a new generation, they won't know what it is like to be Mexican, and will identify with being an American. I have a strong case because it's already happened after the U.S. purchased Mexico's northern lands. Not a single Hispanic who has been living in the US since the handover knows much Spanish, and those was what, 3-4 generations ago? None of them calls themselves Mexican. Look at Susana Martínez if you want a more concrete example. I can promise you that, unless the US joins the North American Union, Spanish is not going to supplant English. It hasn't in Miami, it hasn't in El Paso or Brownsville or Laredo or San Diego, etc. The Spanish speaking generation is going to die off and leave an English speaking one behind, just like it has already happened since the 1800s till today in the border states. There won't be a press 2 for English for long, because 90%+ of them won't be able to converse in Spanish, if they hope to join the mainstream and almost all of them will want to.

We can look at another example that everyone always misses. The Cajuns in Louisiana. They live mostly amongst themselves, and the old generations born before 1950 were bilingual in French and English, and their parents were fluent in French. These days, the younger generation can't really converse in French entirely, and all of them speak English in a way that you would never have noticed they also speak French, to a degree. So even amongst the French in Louisiana they assimilated into the mainstream. I'm sure 70 years ago they had shops and things that were advertised in French as well as English, not so much anymore.

Why are you here? Unless you are Native American, your family came here for one reason or another. Who are you to question why someone is in this country ia a citizen. Mitt Romney's family has been in this country on one side since the early 1700's.
