A couple of bestselling books does it. That's also how Palin made her fortune. Palin only had one bestseller; Obama has two, and unlike Palin, his books are still selling.
Once a politician is established is established as an author, following speaking fees make a lot of money. I don't know how much Obama charged, but Palin charged $50,000 for a speech while she was hot. Speaking tours are like any tour, so speakers who make $50k or more per speech can easily come home after 6 weeks on the road with $500,000 or more. Bill Clinton charges $100,000 per appearance.
Many authors, political or not, continue to make a ton of money long after their last book was published. A Pulitzer winner can be a bargain speaker at $75,000 per appearance, and most of their appearances only last for about an hour. They are often solidly booked with sellout audiences, where a dinner with a talk afterwards, usually followed by a book signing, typically costs $75-200 a plate. Audience size is most often around 300-500 people. At 500 people/$200 each, that's $100,000 gross for the night, and the speaker gets half or more of it.
