I have examined all religions, as well as my narrow sphere, my straightened means, and my busy life, would allow; and the result is that the Bible is the best Book in the world. It contains more philosophy than all the libraries I have seen." December 25, 1813 letter to Thomas Jefferson
"Without Religion this World would be Something not fit to be mentioned in polite Company, I mean Hell." [John Adams to Thomas Jefferson, April 19, 1817]

Why are we limiting ourselves to Adams? This originated as a discussion of whether the United States was founded as a Christian nation, and surely other authorities than Adams would have something relevant to say on the subject.
BTW your second quote was truncated. In full, it reads
"Twenty times in the course of my late reading have I been on the point of breaking out, "This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it!!!" But in this exclamation I would have been as fanatical as Bryant or Cleverly. Without religion this world would be something not fit to be mentioned in polite company, I mean hell."
You'll notice that Adams was saying that religion has good effects (on balance), not that he actually believed in it. Napoleon Bonaparte said "Religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet." That does not mean he was pious.
^ no Silas since it comes from FAUX and their smear campaign. What does Obama's pastor have to do with his own religious beliefs? He is quoted in the article saying that he doesn't agree with him all of the time religiously or politically.
does it come from fox news miamirob? open your mind and come into the light! AlterNet: Blogs: PEEK: Obama Pastor rips NY Times a new one, gently (http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/49627/ - broken link)
This Democrat will. I think it's blatant pandering, it's irrelevant to his ability to govern, and it lowers my respect for Senator Obama, which wasn't stratospheric to begin with.
Well said and I concurr.
