John McCain just announced he will run for another term. This will put him in his mid-eighties. How old is too old for politics?
Do you think we will ever have term limits on senators?
Do you think it would be unethical to pose an age limit on elected officials?
There has to be a point were you can no longer do the job.
I think a Senator in his 80s is generally too old to be effective any longer. While there are certainly exceptions, by the time a person is in the 8th decade of life, no matter how good his health may be, the aging brain doesn't process things the same as it did when younger.
No matter how good a mind remains, there is still some short-term memory loss that can be anywhere from mild to severe. I'm 70, and I see this in myself, everyone I know of my age, and in those a decade younger and older than I. The 'senior moment' is real. A familiar name, word, or event may suddenly just fail to come to mind at any moment. Sometimes the word comes after a few seconds, and sometimes it never comes unless by coincidence.
This has caused me problems in the middle of important discussions, and my dealings aren't important to the nation. When a Senator has a senior moment, something vital could be overlooked or un-mentioned at a critical time.
And that's why I would like to see age limits on all offices. But I don't think age limits will ever come to pass.
Sen. McCain has been in office long enough. He needs to leave, and Arizona needs some fresh blood representing them. I think this is mostly only an old man's vanity at work.
He has been too old for office. I can't understand why with all of his money he can't retire and enjoy some of it. He isn't relevent and hasn't been since his defeat by Obama. He sure loves to beat the war drums though. He is old and ready for war and ready to take us all with him...

Of course, it may well be that Senator McCain plans to run for another term, win, then retire after a year or so, allowing the Governor to appoint a replacement, and so give the new incumbant time to strengthen his or her position for the next election.

McCain will be facing a challenge from the right. McCain may never make it to the ballot. He was censured by Republicans a while back for his leftist views. Like many states, moderates have fled from the two parties leaving them to the extremists.
Someone needs to put that old fart out of his misery...(although he does have a HOT wife to look at... That can't be too miserable, with a little Viagra)

Sure. Anything's possible.
And who knows? Maybe Arizona loves McCain so much he can never be defeated. Strom Thurmond was senile as a fence post during his last terms in the Senate, but he was still re-elected time after time. He reached the age of 100 while still serving as a Senator. His people must have known that he wasn't capable of doing anything much for many years, but he was so loved that they couldn't imagine voting him out.
And in his day, Thurmond was as prominent politically as McCain.
Personally, I think 24 years in the Senate is enough for them all, but that term limit would probably need a constitutional amendment, and it won't ever happen.
