Does anyone else remember the 1991 Louisiana Governor's Race? Call it the Campaign From Hell.

Louisiana has the Jungle Primary system, where the top 2 qualifiers, regardless of party, advance to the general election.

There were 3 serious candidates. Incumbent Governor Buddy Roemer received 27% of the vote to finish 3rd, leaving a general election between David Duke and ethically challenged former Governor Edwin Edwards. The choice was so unpalatable that there were pro-Edwards bumper stickers reading "Vote For The Crook. It's Important!" Another winner was "Vote For The Lizard, Not The Wizard". Edwards was the guy who brashly claimed in one of his runs that he was sure to be elected "unless I'm caught in bed with a live boy or a dead girl!"

Eventually, Edwards served time in federal prison for taking bribes from casino operators while Duke was sentenced to 15 months in Club Fed and fined $10,000 for mail fraud.

Whenever you get the idea that your choices on Election Day could not possibly get worse, remember Louisiana 1991.

Yes, it could.

It was the era of New Deal-Great Society. That was what democrats supported and enacted back then, and these guys were all Democrats. Only Strom Thurmond, among the names you list, eventually switched to the GOP. Eastland was the only name from your list who was much of a conservative. Hollings, for example, was an advocate of social welfare generally and food stamps in particular.
I didn't remember Stennis supporting big government liberalism; the rest I don't really disagree with. In the '30s and '40s especially, most Southerners were dirt poor and had no problem with big government projects that they benefitted from, such as TVA, as long as segregation wasn't threatened. Later, support for big government liberalism began to wain, especially after Hubert Humphreys pro-civil rights speech at the Democratic Convention of 1948. Even LBJ had to toe the line with his Southern Senate caucus members until he became President. Not sure what year it was, but the year that George Smathers defeated Claude Pepper on the Florida Democratic Senate primary marked the departure of a true Southern liberal. It was sometime in during the Red Scare, because Claude was attacked as "Red" Pepper. That's the race where some sources claim that Smathers purposely took advantage of the stupidity of Florida voters; others claim his comments were made as a joke at some gathering. I can't remember all of them, but there was one bit about Pepper and his wife being friends with an actress and the story has him charging that Pepper was involved with a "known thespian".

Here's the full quote that was first printed in a Florida magazine and later picked up Time. Smathers swore to his dying day that ne never said it but as with a lot of apocryphal tales, the quote was too good to pass up for the sake of laughter, even it was a forgery. From George Smathers "redneck" speech:

"Are you aware that Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert? Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law, he has a brother who is a known homo sapiens,[5] and he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York. Worst of all, it is an established fact that Mr. Pepper, before his marriage, habitually practiced celibacy."

So who here at City-Data still thinks that the KKK supports "teh" Democrats?

Lol, Give me a break.

This is supposed to be an earth-shattering, meaningful revelation? Mao killed so many people they can't even come up with a number and, I guarantee you, plenty of Communists vote for Democrats. Liberal clowns are hilarious.

What rot.

Oh yeah? How did you figure that out? David Duke is absolutely antisemitic.

Donald Trump loves Israel. His own daughter and his grandkids are Jewish. He pretty much insulted every countries in the world, but he has unconditional love for Israel.

I would file a report. I don't let the opinions of others dictate what I will/won't do...

Donald Trump is clearly a racist. That part isn't really in question anymore. What's shocking is he's leading GOP polling. We'll see how many in the GOP support his opinions..
