I posted a similar thread in the "Hillary is Crying again!" thread but it seems some people would rather bash and act like lowlifes than take an actual look at the article/video.

I've noticed this to be an enduring theme across all forums when it comes to politics--people can't seem to keep civil. Too many times I have seen Obama supporters bash Hillary, Hillary supporters bash Obama, Republicans call Democrats communist-socialist pinkos, and Democrats make sweeping statements about how the convservatives are a group of brainless sheeple.

Supposedly, we live in a great country that, might I quote a CD Forum post: "a country of friendly, courteous people who embrace diversity". While I have enough faith in our country to actually represent that occassionally, that sentiment is certainly not being exuded here on this forum.

It's quite pathetic how far people will go to somehow affirm that all the other candidates are unworth and that their chosen candidate is the only one who knows what is going on. There is a lot of trash being spewed by the media lately and yet you people, like gullible children, take it in and throw it back at the opposite party as if you'd just gotten your hands on some sort of superweapon that will destroy all things that you disagree with.

"HILLARY CRIED AGAIN!"

"McCAIN TRIED TO SOUND SOUTHERN!"

"ROMNEY IS A POLYGAMIST OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG"

..pathetic.

When the citizens of supposedly the most powerful country in the world are easily subjected to such degrading, low class behavior, one really has to wonder exactly how viable are the decisions we make? Are candidates getting voted in by people who have no decency to look neutrally at each candidates' issues but would rather submit themselves to mudslinging and namecalling?

And what's worse...when people are called out for their rude behavior, they somehow think it is JUSTIFIED because its a political public figure. Since when is acting like a spoilt little brat that needs a spanking justified?

We have a great country--plenty of resources, lots of money (relatively), good living conditions. I love everything the country can offer to its citizens. But sometimes, I wonder about the citizens themselves...

I also agree with you and I thank you for raising this issue.
But don't you think people just reflect what they see politicians doing all the time?

civility?...bashing?....rude?.... crying?....I cant see why youre surprised at what the American populations reaction to the candidates is like, when the candidates all behave the same way, on tv and in public, I think some people tend to put these less than avg candidates on too steep a pedestal... we learn alot from our leaders, including their own behavior .....

I agree also...

If you support a candidate then you should be able to point out the positives of their candidacy without having to sling mud at another. No one expects everyone to agree on one candidate.

I would hope that American citizens are intelligent enough to be able to form their own opinions and not be influenced by bad behavior, whether it is in their peers or their supposed leaders. This is exactly the type of thing I'm talking about...saying "but he/she/it/they are doing it!" is NOT a justification. As adults, we are accountable for our behavior and I'm sure most people have been taught by our mothers at a young age, "If your friends jumped off a cliff, would you do it too?"

Have we forgotten that lesson?

Suffice it to say, SmokeyGrl, that the ordinary American voter would rather not engage themselves in policy, research and critical thinking. Too many would rather the issues and candidates dumb down their messages, while appealing to the lowest common denominator. The result is bumper sticker sloganeering and one-liners.

It's a shame and an embarassment that people in other countries can still lose life and limb if they even considered voting for the wrong candidate (or at all) while voters in our country act as if our electoral process is one big reality TV show.

While I agree with your sentiments, politics is a "full contact" activitity. The think tanks are full of analysis of past elections showing those most civil end up those most defeated.

Even the rather civil Bush Sr trotted out the Willie Horton scare tactics in 1988.

Ill file that one in my lessons learned files...sure I felt like jumping when some of my friends did, what rolls down hill ...you know the old story.... "bad behavior"...give me a serious break, the idiots youre putting in this high falootin office get everything we make, if we say anything negative between us or about them its PAID FOR....that office represent the whole country, not one person...so dont take it personal for them or yourself...freedom of speech is not always welcomed, but it is allowed...

p.s. my mothers worse than me, dont get her started on them...

amen. Politicians have brought this negativity on themselves. When someone like Hilbilly stages a crying exercise similar to just before the New Hampshire vote, one can't help but be cynical. These politicians, from both parties, know what they're doing because it's worked before. People love emotion. They relate to it and everyone engages in it almost on a continuous basis. I am very tired of having to sit back and take this garbage expecting to lap it up and believe it. The Clintons will do anything and everything to get power. That's no secret. Others follow the same path. Many people will just accept it as being the way things are. I don't.
