I understand what they want, but how is that technically possible?
Additionally, what happens in case a nominee who won the primaries has to quit for any reason?

The reason many hate Trump is because the establishment talks bad about Trump. The first time Hilary talked bad about Trump the Disgusting establishment joined Hilary beating up Trump. That first negative talking point was Trump was creating terrorists. instead of defending him. The GOP sounded like you which is a disgrace. You agree with Hillary the liar. A disgrace.
My decision not to vote for Trump is based solely on Trump's own words and actions. If I voted based on whether or not the establishment talked "bad" about a candidate, I could see voting for Trump to "spite" the GOPe. Since I prefer to be an informed voter who decides based on the candidate, I will not be voting Trump in the general if he is the GOP nominee. I will not be voting for Hillary either.
and those of us who hate Trump will vote third party or stay home. Hillary wins either way. Tried to warn the Trumpettes a vote for Trump is a vote for Hillary but they didn't listen.

You can't prove a negative but you certainly can prove something happened, IF it did.
At this point it's a bald faced lie until proven otherwise. We're gonna need a little more than "I listened to a tape", at the very least the source of the tape. Because IF there really had been "thousands and thousands" celebrating the attacks in the streets of Jersey City it's very likely there also would've been reports of at least hundreds and hundreds of skulls meeting baseball bats in those very same streets, street justice happens quickly.
I'd say Donny's unsupported by anything factualallegation is just a fear-mongering lie in the GOP tradition of the drunk Senator from Wisconsin, IF there may be two or three, LIE and say there are "thousands and thousands"! LIE and say there's something there that isn't, then LIE about all the heroic BS you'll do to solve that non-existent problem. Tailgunner Joe would be proud.
The tape is from the radio show of Howard Stern. The people were calling in ,disgusted by the Muslim neighborhoods all celebrating.

I think the media is deliberately keeping it's viewers in the dark and on edge. I think they want a mess at the convention, it's good for ratings. You are correct, a "unity ticket" is technically unlikely.

It’s funny: there were all these news reports of Muslims in Jersey City and Paterson cheering on 9/11 and all of the reporters and media outlets now say they lied. How do we know they aren’t lying now? In fact, we know they are, indeed, lying. Just because nobody had a video smartphone back then to record it, it now didn’t happen and the stories are all made up? Well, then, I guess all of these media outlets are admitting they lie, make up stories, and can’t be believed. They were either lying then or now. They can’t have it both ways.

And then there are some who hate Trump because they are being paid to do so. Posting that paid hatred day and night.
So who is paying? The GOP or the Dems? Hillary or Bernie? Lotta choices there.
Frankly, I've suspected the same about the pro-Trump posters being paid. After all, he did pay actors to show up at his 'informal' campaign announcement. The Trump campaign denied it until it was proven when a casting call ad was produced.
When you see that someone registered this month and just starts posting lots of pro-Trump stuff--I find it highly suspicious. Or when someone who registered 8 years ago, but never posted once, and all of a sudden is a prolific pro-Trump poster--seems weird. He'd be much more likely to pay people to astroturf for him--PR maven that he is.
