He STILL is not a serious candidate.

No, it would be the only way the Republican Party can survive. Put up a last minute candidate with little time to vet him or her.

the article speculates that trump would drop out due to the diminishing amount of "unflagging support" and "idol worship". if that is the case then it would seem a simple solution would be for trump to have more rallies where his supporters could prop up his ego.

Donny Deutsch, who has known Trump for years and years, made the same observation today, and he claimed that above everything else in the world, Trump cares about the Trump Brand. If it looks like the Brand is going to be affected or the Brand is going to be equated with (and ever tied to) 'losing' he'll find an excuse and pack it in.

The whole judge issue, which has affected his support and polls, was all about saving the Brand--and look how far he has been willing to take it.

This pretty much reflects the amount of commitment Trump has to the campaign, his supporters, the GOP or the country. None.

I think he'll leave in a New York minute if he hears the word "losing" more than a few times. He won't make it to November. Then the GOP would only need a kind soul willing to fall on the sword for the election, so that Paul Ryan can run in 2020.

Of course the entire thread is based on the supposed pontifications of a CNBC pontificator. The network of Brian Williams & Hillary Clinton can't give a single reason why Hillary might win.

i.e. Trump isn't dropping out and Trump will be the next President of the USA.

Well, he won't be dropping out anyway.

That would be even worse honestly. A lot of his voters would simply not show up to vote if that happened. Most of them are not motivated by their dislike of Hillary Clinton but problems within the Republican party. Stealing the nomination from the guy who captured the majority will just highlight that problem.

Why not Romney, since we are apparently recycling candidates that were already rejected?

The only reason that I give this report any credence is that Trump is all about winning. He has said that many times over the past several months.

If by the time of the convention his numbers in the polls start slipping badly, I can see him withdrawing because he would not want to face the humiliation of a landslide defeat. Trump is all about image and how he is perceived and he would not want to be remembered as the candidate who got a shellacking.

I don't think there will be any attempt to actually deny him the nomination - that would be suicidal for the party - but if Trump chooses to withdraw of his own volition that may be different and depending on his explanation it may not alienate the 14 million people who voted for him.

It also depends on who the GOP nominates in his stead. If it is someone like Romney, I think Trump would urge his supporters not to vote for Romney. So the challenge would be to find someone else that can offer real competition to Clinton and at the same time not alienate Trump's supporters.

I genuinely believe that he had a decent shot at winning the general but the past week to ten days has been disastrous for him with even those in the GOP refusing to support him. Of course, by the time of the convention the events of the past week may be a distant memory unless Trump makes some other outrageous comment.
