There hasn't been a great option since Eisenhower. After that big industry began to control more and more government and using it for its own benefit. This then led to a bigger, and bigger government existing for the benefit of itself.

If you want to change direction, then you have to begin choosing candidates that will begin to upset this trend. In other words, begin to work for a third-party that you believe in.
