Democrat Mark Kelly announced a bid for the 2020 Senate seat currently held by Martha McSally.

Retired astronaut Mark Kelly, who became a prominent gun-control advocate after his wife, former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was shot in a failed assassination attempt, announced Tuesday he will run to finish John McCain's last term in the U.S. Senate.

Kelly, 54, is a top Democratic recruit to take on Republican Martha McSally in one of the most closely contested Senate races of the 2020 election.

McSally is a former Republican congresswoman who was appointed to McCain's seat last year after she narrowly lost to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema.

Personally, I prefer having split senators from both parties, keeps them both in check. Having 2 Democrat senators in office for AZ doesn't represent all the voices. We don't need another person who is anti-2nd Amendment or rides the coattails of a family member just for the sake of the empathy vote.

Kelly seems like a hell of a contender. Where does he say that he’s against the 2nd Amendment? Responsible gun control doesn’t mean anti-2A. Constitutional Amendments are not absolutes. I don’t see why you can’t support peoples’ right to bear arms but also favor restrictions that would keep firearms away from the mentally ill, for example. Seems like basic, common sense.

Has he said that he wants to “grab” people’s guns or is this just baseless fear?

This issue alone will make him a tough sell in this state. I hope he loses in the primary.

Ruben Gallego is also toying with running as well.

It might be too early to ask this question but what is Mr. Kelly's chance of getting elected?

You always make the most reasonable and most logical posts. You do this while constantly maintaining your cool. I keep trying to rep you in multiple threads but I can't because I've repped you so much. Keep it up.

Not an Arizonan here. However, I think its just pitiful that so many people are willing to let some phony second amendment issue dictate their choice in the election. Kelly hasn't even said what his views are on firearms and a large percentage of people are willing to lynch him based on assumptions they make.

The only respectable argument I've heard against a Kelly candidacy so far is that the state ought to have a senator from each political party. If only that were true of all the states.
