I don't think he is going quietly. Is he working with the Dems to lay the groundwork to be the shadow President if the Dem wins? A condition of his endorsement might be that he calls the shots.

But the nastier ones — the Justice Department inspector general probe of FBI chief Jim Comey’s announcements on the Clinton email investigation, and the leak about that “Russian dossier” — have more deniability....
The next Democratic president, whether he or she is elected in 2020 or later, will not be interested in being in anyone else's shadow - even that of a former president who is popular with his party. The Obama era is a closed chapter in US history, just like that of Carter, Clinton and Bush Jr (the other living ex-presidents).
Though I disagreed with Obama on many things and what he did to the Democrat party is why I left it, I'll give him credit for not going down that rabbit hole.
So no I don't believe he's pushing for a shadow 3rd term.
I absolutely believe however, that he doesn't support his own VP for nomination for President.
