The hatred of other people or religions was not the controversial part - it was the guns and religion. You don't have to be a bitter person to enjoy hunting, collecting guns, or to feel that you need to keep a gun to pretect your family.

I don't have a problem with anyone realizing that people are bitter as a result of their treatment by the government. I can understand that.

My problem with the statement is the apparent conclusion that people only cling to religion and buy guns out of bitterness or frustration.

I do not know a single person that has turned to religion or gun for these reasons. Most of the people I know that have "clung" to religion and are bitter, were religious from childhood, long before personally interacting with any government, and have become bitter over time. To conclude that it is normal for people to reject religion as a normal course of maturity is ludicrous. To assume that people have only remained religious is due to frustration is criminal in it's implication.

The same is true for gun owners. Most of the owners I know are hunters or target shooters. I also know a very few hunters that are strictly sport hunters and I do not know anyone that loves or collects guns out of any type of frustration. The only people I am aware of, but do not know any personnaly, are the survivalist/anti-government compound types that truly feel threatened by governmental actions and intentions. These are not your typical small town, Pennsylvanian folk.

These comments sound more like a rally to anti gun and anti religious crowds than a legitimate statement about frustration.

No! Read carefully.

EDIT - CNN on same story
CNN debunks false report about Obama - CNN.com

I admit this smear campaign wasnt officially sanctioned by the GOP or McCain, of course. These are stealth right-wingers doing the same dirty tricks we remember from 2000 and 2004.

I did not see that Obama stated that small town people hate other people or other religions. When did he say that? I missed it completely.

I guess you meant gun rather than guyns, but I am not aware of guns becoming a tradition either. The uses for guns might be considered a tradition by some, you could say there is a tradition of gun ownership that is stronger in some areas than others I suppose. I don't know why you would consider that in the same category as hatred and intolerance.

Perhaps you can explain why we should become less tolerant of person property ownership in America.

He said the people in these small towns who have been hit by economic crisis: he doesnt say ALL gun owners, or all religious people

He s trying to sound empathic to their plight
