For the 2016 and 2020 cycles... the best candidate for each party to represent that party in a General Election

Democrats : Joe Biden > Bernie Sanders > Michael Bloomberg > Hillary Clinton

Republicans : John Kasich > Marco Rubio > Donald Trump > Ted Cruz

GOP should have nominated Kasich or Rubio in 2016. They would have easily defeated Hillary back then and will be in a better position than Trump to take on Biden.

If Cruz doesn't get a SCOTUS seat he will run in '24

Guess what?
It was all talk, as they still voted for Obama instead.

The days of the milquetoast establishment Republicans (aka RINO's) is over with. Most have been waiting for another Ronald Reagan to come along, and instead got the Bushes, and two useless candidates that couldn't beat an inexperienced political neophyte in Obama.
In the mean time the country was going to hell in a hand basket with massive governmental regulations and agencies that were independently powerful, and answerable to almost no one.

Trump was not my cup of tea, but compared to Hillary, he was the better of the two choices.
He lived up to most of his promises and tried to get others done if not for the constant resistance from the (D) party.
He certainly did pretty good with the economy, jobs and the like. So for those who dislike his personality fine, but judge him on his performance, not his personality.

`
Calling it 'personality' is a rationalization.

It's a lack of sufficient character.

And Biden also lacks sufficient character.

Neither one of them deserves a vote.

The evangelicals keep trying to rescue the Republican Party, and that will be their undoing!

You may consider converting the Republican party from conservative to liberal as rescuing it, but us conservatives do not.

Never Trumpers and their pretend Republican party talk a lot of crap... Especially when they vote Democrat... It's one thing to not vote and it's another when you vote Democrat.. it shows their true colors and we don't bend to fringe niche groups and that is what they are...

I think he sped up realignment of regions but US politics is amazingly cyclical. No party has held the White House for more than 3 terms since the FDR/Truman combo.

If Rs toned it down on social issues they would win back the suburbs tomorrow. That said, I think a lot of the Rs who were most loyal to Trump are going to be toast at the National level. Mitch McConnel, John Thune, and the like are in very safe states. But Cruz, Johnson, Portman and the like are going to have difficult reelection campaigns. Toomey in Pa has already bailed on both the Senate and an anticipated Gov run because he saw the writing on the wall.

That said- if the Rs pick a good candidate in 2024, they will have a chance. If they pick Rand Paul, Tom Cotton, or Ted Cruz they'll lose again.

The other biggie is that in about 6-8 years the EC could turn from an R advantage to a D one. If Texas, Arizona, Ga, and NC keep drifting towards Dems- the Rs need to win the entire Rustbelt and another mid-size state to counter. Even removing Texas the other three states are likely to have more EC votes than Pa, Michigan, and Wi after the next census.

Then again- we could always see the 'People's Party' that the former Berners want to build siphon of Dem votes from the Left. If they lose all the Rustbelt (except Illinois) and Vermont & New Hampshire to vote splits, they literally need to win the entire sunbelt.

Whoever thought the last 50 years of POTUS would make Gerald Ford (whip inflation now) and Jimmy Carter ( lusting in his heart) to look like bloody geniuses and great presidents. At this point I would gladly vote for either. Even Nixon doesnt look so bad. McGovern looks like bloody saint. Never thought I would look fondly back on 1970s politics.
