Obama did break his promise. However, the average American has no idea of how elections are financed, and simply does not care. So, it's a good political move.

Its ridiculous for him to get criticized for it. He said that without knowing things would develop the way they did (mainly the huge amounts of internet funding of which there was no precedence for), and people are diluding themselves if they think any politican would do otherwise.

One thing that should not be overlooked is how his campaign is not funded by lobbyists, unlike McSame...

Republicans are truly pathetic. So you want the guy to stick to the pledge to accept $ 85M when he can pretty much raise that money in four weeks. I mean, how stupid do you really have to be to believe that he wouldn't opt out? And how stupid do you really have to be to believe that McCain wouldn't rely on public financing when on average he's has been raising about $ 11M a month?

The republicans are scared and want to handicap Obama. Obama would have been stupid to have accepted public financing.

Dont you know, Democrats are allowed to break promises, like Democrats taking over congress with promises of cutting price of gas, and fiscal responsibility.

Made Hillary look silly fundraising and put her in debt!

Obama no personal debt!

More then double the fundraising of McCain and yet he is clueless about money!

From CNN:
It's not an easy decision, and especially because I support a robust system of public financing of elections," Obama wrote. "But the public financing of presidential elections as it exists today is broken, and we face opponents who've become masters at gaming this broken system."

Obama repeatedly broke campaign fundraising records during the Democratic primary season. Since January 2007, he has raised more than $272 million.

Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, raised less than half that amount, roughly $100 million, over the same period.

I guess McCain does need government assistance.

Poor Republicans who are the party of the rich and from on here all I can tell is that Obama is the candidate of the dumb, uneducated, welfare grabbing losers. My oh my how is he doing it? Something is not jelling between what is posted on here and his CURRENT success!

For many, it has turned into a virtual worship of the man Obama vs. any real defense of his policies. He makes a pledge and they worship it. He breaks a pledge and they worship it. Associates with terrorists and convicted felons; worship it. I don't ever recall seeing such a bankrupt core of followers that have become wrapped up in the worship of a man vs. support of his policies. There is virtually nothing Obama could say or do, no waffle, no change of direction, no lie or breaking of promise, no criminal association that would give his followers pause. I don't even know if many here understand or even care what his actual positions or plans for the future are.

This is in stark contrast to those who support McCain; each one of whom could likely give several initiatives of his in which they disagree (and even some of Obama's that they may like!)
