He is well within his authority to ask the head of the SEC to resign if he wanted to. That goes for any president.
So, if you have a complete incompetent in a position, I guess you could sit down and "work out a plan" and hopefully the nincompoop wouldn't mess it up....or, you could ask for his resignation and put in his place someone you, as president believes better suits the job.
Tell me which is the better indicator of leadership.

I'll tell you what isn't a "better indicator of leadership," and that's someone who regularly screams obscenities at the people who work for him, at his colleagues, and at people in other nations during diplomatic meetings. The man is a loose cannon--very, very dangerous. And that pipe bomb he selected as running mate is no better.

That's just it, he's not within his authority to do so. He can't fire him so at best he could pressure him.
The problem with that then is what happens when he just doesn't like someone's politics. Is he going to pressure them into resigning too?
A leader knows how to get the best out of people. When that fails they know how to work around them. They do not however think the position means carte blanche to get rid of anyone they want gone.
Maybe Sarah Palin has just been a bad influence on him?
