Most of the evaluation of the politcal candidates is based on the "expectations game" The Republican Party has been talking to their friends in the press and setting expectations for Sarah Palins performance in the VP Debate. They have set expectations so low that the media will call it a win if she sticks to her "talking points and smiles and looks really pretty"
What a sad state of affairs! There should be no expectations other than a need for both candidates to be the best and brightest our country has to offer.
Do you expect low expectations on Palin will allow her to look like an idiot and still come out as a winner?

Depends on who we're talking about. The McCain drones on here will drool all over her performance even if she doesn't open her mouth for 90 minutes- they'd talk about how she looked "presidential" and had a "commanding presence" . It'll take a little bit more to impress the media (though not much)- if she gets through the whole debate without making some incoherent statement (ala the Couric interview), they'll declare her the "winner", or at least say that she "exceeded expectations".
For the voters who are still undecided, it's going to be tough for her to come out ahead, IMO. Biden would truly have to screw the pooch, and even then she'd only "win" by default.

She'll try to play the victim card. The "noble" victim, of course, who is willing to "face a bully" because she "puts country first." If she can get Biden to look like a "meanie" she can work the sympathy vote.
Watch for faux outrage, the words "shame on you" and maybe even manufactured tears at some poignant memory. Miss America contestants are very good at this game.
Oh, and before the McCain drones take my "screw the pooch" reference and think I was referring to Palin like they said Obama was with his "lipstick on a pig" reference", I'm going on the record stating that it was in no way meant to refer to Palin or her "pitbull/hockey mom" status.......... :O

No. An idiot is an idiot regardless of expectations. All politicians like to go into these things with the general public having low expectations, so even if they screw up, they look ok.
In a way, Biden and Palin suffer from the same condition ... you never know what either of them will say! Had it not been for the recent interviews Palin did, and the cluelessness that she amply demonstrated, I would have thought that the VP debate would be close, even a toss-up. But after those interviews? Whew.
She never, ever should have been asked to run as VP, and once asked, she didn't have the clarity of judgment or simple common sense to say "no."

That's because she "didn't hesitate. You can't blink in these situations". I bet that in retrospect, she's wishing she'd blinked like Katie Couric........
I guess it will all depend on which questions are asked and if she has been pre-prepped or not. If a zinger question comes out of no where and she's not prepared, we will get to see the real Palin. Let's hope they play "let's stump the candidate" and come up with something truly unexpected so we can really see what she's about. And get a good laugh while we're at it.

You're going on logic, which is a mistake. You're forgetting Palin's religious belief structure. Think about it- if she feels her rise to power is predestined, then why would she question it? It's the will of God. It sounds like the premise of an SNL skit, I know, but I'm completely serious.
The scarier part is her "doomsday" expectation. What if McCain wins? If she feels it is her duty and privilege to help bring about the end times, imagine the no-blinking decisions this woman could make if things go badly for McCain......

That's what I'm hoping for.
