Alright, since the trap was sprung prematurely, this phrase is from the Preamble to the Constitution

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

The point of this thread was to see how all the people that think Obama is a socialist would react to that phrase.

So, is "promote the general Welfare" a socialist idea?

"Promote the general welfare" is a term in the preamble of our Constitution.

I see somebody has already posted this, but I guess it is okay to repeat it anyway. OMG..I remembered that from elementary school. Why do so many people not recognize that phrase? Sorry state of affairs...talk about the dumbing down in this country.

Socialism according to Dictionary.com:

1. Means of production are given to the workers.

2. Next step from capitalism before communism (according to Marx).

There's no way in hell that "promoting the general welfare" is a socialist/communist/Marxist idea. Those are totally separate systems of government.

promoting the general welfare is a little bit different than the robin hood mentality of the federal government.

Do you understand the meaning of the word 'socialist'?

Right Wingers think that something accomplished by the government for the public good that is paid for by taxpayers is 'socialist'! Where did this idea come from?
